Early Years
Birth 28 Nov • Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee, USA.
The eldest son of Felix Motlow and Nettie Daniel. Lem was the nephew of Jasper "Jack" Daniel, founder of the Jack Daniel's Distillery
Lem grew up on a farm just outside of Lynchburg. When he was about 14 years old, he started working at his Uncle Jack's distillery. He learned the business from the ground up, starting with the bookkeeping.
Since Jack had never married or had children, upon his death in , he willed the distillery to his favorite nephews Lem Motlow and Dick Daniel.
Two years later Lem bought out Dick's share.
Distillery Years
Lem was more interested in the business side of the distillery, so his younger brother Jess Motlow took over the distilling side. They made a good team, and together saw the distillery through its greatest challenges - Prohibition and the Great Depression.
Taking everything they had learned from Jack, Lem and Jess took the distillery to the next level and made the name "Motlow" as important as the name on the bottle.
By the sale of alcohol was prohibited throughout most of Tennessee.

In , Lem was elected as a State Senator from Moore County. His only interest was getting the state prohibition laws appealed. He didn't succeed in this, but did get a state law passed that alcohol could be sold in small quantities as a medical prescription.
To this day, Moore County, where the Jack Daniel's distillery is located, is one of the state's many dry counties.
Therefore, while it is legal to distill the product within the county, it is illegal to purchase it there. However, a state law has provided one exception: a distillery may sell one commemorative product, regardless of county statutes.[24] Jack Daniel's now sells Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, the original No. 7 blend (in a commemorative bottle), and a seasonal blend (on rotation) at the distillery's White Rabbit Bottle Shop.

The company's inventory could only be sold as a prescription drug. In August , well-connected crooks methodically siphoned bourbon through feet of hose to waiting trucks. They drained barrels, refilling them with water and vinegar, and left one barrel untouched for inspections.
This became known as "Milking". Lem was thought to be behind the operation and was indicted for the crime.
On March 17, , after a visit here for brief court appearance, Motlow had drinks with friends before heading to Union Station. He stumbled unsteadily onto the Louisville & Nashville night train for the trip home to Tennessee.
Sleeping-car car porter Ed Wallis asked Motlow for his ticket. He didn’t have one and became irate that Wallis, who was black, dared to challenge him. Conductor Clarence Pullis, who was white, intervened.
