  • Prints by Tadashige Ono - Sosaku Hanga

Even among the artists of the sosaku hanga art movement, Ono Tadashige's art works are beyond any of the common artistic patterns. His print subjects, showing often ugly industrial scenes are gloomy, dismal, cheerless, kind of morbid, even depressing.

Nevertheless the woodblock prints by the artist are in good demand and not cheap. Tadashige Ono beats the old saying "Ugliness does not sell."

    Life of Tadashige Ono

Tadashige Ono was born on January 19, , in Tokyo, Japan. He had studied art at the Hongo Art Institute from until One of his teachers was Okada Saburosuke.

During the period before world war II Tadashige Ono came into contact with artists of the Japanese sosaku hanga art movement and became acitve in odd groups that called themselves the proletarian art movement. Among the progressive art scene in Japan of the s and s was a movement of politically far-left artists who were influenced by the communist revolution in Russia.

These artists dreamed of a socialist utopia and founded groups like the Children's Free Art and the Farmer's Art Movement. The spiritual leader and founder of these socialist activities was Kanae Yamamoto, the grandfather of sosaku hanga. Kanae Yamamoto had experienced the revolution in Russia when he was on his way back home from art studies in Europe after the outbreak of world war I.

The breakthrough in the career for Tadashige Ono came after the end of the Pacific war. He was admitted to the Print Biennales in in Tokyo and in in Moscow (He must have felt at home there.). Ono Tadashige became a visiting professor at a couple of Japanese universities - Tokyo University of Fine Arts, Aichi University of Fine Arts, Hiroshima University, and Utsunomiya University.

The artist published several books on modern Japanese hanga and one book on Chinese prints. He exhibited regularly with the renowned College Women’s Association of Japan annual print shows (CWAJ).

How Did Tadashige Ono Make his Prints?

His favorite subjects were town views of industrialized areas.

In full contrast to the shin hanga artists, Tadashige does not show a beautified Japan, but the ugly Japan of industrialized cities.

Ono tadashige biography for kids pictures His prints gained acclaim at prominent International Print Biennials, such as the event in Tokyo and the exhibition in Moscow. Artelino Who? And even when he shows just a cat, the image gives the viewer a feeling between miserable and pitiful. The colors used by Tadashige Ono are mostly dark and somber with much use of black.

And while a printmaker usually starts to print the light colors and then adds or overprints the dark colors, Ono Tadashige did it the other way around.

He began the printing process by darkening the paper with black ink. The light and white colors, sometimes even a gaudy yellow, added on top of the black background gave them a kind of opaque effect, which is so typical for his art prints.

The technique of Tadashige Ono is called inkoku tashoku-zuri mokuhan (colour negative woodblock printing).

    Tips for Collectors

I am trying to imagine the reaction of the art critique and author of ukiyo-e books, Jack Ronald Hillier (), towards Tadashige Ono's prints.

Ono tadashige biography for kids youtube Title Morning of May 1st, Paris. Title Barking to the Ocean Wave. Ono's work, with its black undertones, sonorous color, and haunting images of urban decay, is perhaps the darkest of the sosaku hanga artists. Japan had its own parallel movement led by Kanae Yamamoto , the pioneer of the sosaku hanga movement.

The artistic tolerance of the art of ukiyo-e ended for Hillier with the woodblock prints by Utamaro Kitagawa. Printmakers that came after the 'Golden Age of Ukiyo-e' like Hiroshige, Kunisada and even Kuniyoshi were in his view representatives of a phase of degeneration and decline. I do not know if he ever saw prints by Tadashige Ono.

I can imagine how he is running away screaming and tearing his hair in despair.

The art of Tadashige Ono is certainly not to everybody's delight. Also fans of beautiful shin hanga landscape prints in pleasing colors, a pagoda in the background and a lady dressed in a kimono crossing a wooden bridge, a shamisen under her arm, holding an old-fashioned colored umbrella during a romantic rain shower, will probably have problems becoming an aficionado of Tadashige Ono prints.

His prints are the opposite of pleasing. Nevertheless, his prints are in good demand in today's print market, and the prices are not cheap.
